100 years ago, Beautiful Jim Key, Dr. William Key and their promoter, Albert R. Rogers, helped energize the flagging humane movement by incorporating the messages of kindness, tolerance, education, literacy, and equality into one cause. They raised money and awareness for local, regional, state and national animal welfare groups; they included the protection of abused women and children in their platform; they pioneered the creed “Be Kind to Animals” and elevated the concept of humane education; they promoted black education and entrepreneurial opportunities for African-Americans; they performed for disadvantaged and disabled children; wherever they performed, communities were mobilized to take stands against cruelty.
